Vol. 121 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in County Tipperary.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the grave situation regarding unemployment in the district of Hollyford, County Tipperary, and that such unemployment has been due to the failure of the Tipperary (S.R.) County Council to prepare schemes of work under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, and whether, in view of the hardship which has been inflicted on the workers of the area since last January through unemployment, he will make representation to the county council in the matter.

It is for the local authority in each case to select works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act for submission for approval. Three schemes have been approved for the Hollyford area. It is not my practice to suggest the selection of any particular works or of works for any particular area and it is left to the local authority to arrange for the timing of the works approved.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state if he is now aware that unemployment amongst road workers in Hollyford and other areas in South Tipperary is due absolutely and entirely to the reduction in the road grant? Is he further aware that the hardships resulting from that unemployment are due to the fact that Deputy Dunne and other members of the Labour Party voted for that reduction?
