Vol. 121 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Concrete Pole Imports.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that concrete electric poles are being imported into this country by local authorities for their housing schemes, while local manufacturers are not even being asked to tender for their supply; and, if so, if he will ensure that Irish firms receive the opportunity to tender for these contracts.

Regulations made under the Housing Acts require materials and appliances of Irish manufacture to be used as far as possible in the provision of houses in respect of which State assistance is claimed and all housing authorities have recently been reminded of this requirement. I am not aware that imported concrete electric poles are being used by local authorities on their housing schemes. If the Deputy will give me particulars of the case or cases to which he refers, I shall be glad to have the matter examined.
