Vol. 123 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Clare Railway.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is proposed to purchase diesel rail cars for use on the West Clare Railway; and, if so, how many and their estimated cost.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether Córas Iompair Éireann have any proposals regarding the West Clare Railway; and, if so, what these proposals are.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 71 and 72 together.

I am informed by Córas Iompair Éireann that it has been decided to provide four diesel rail cars of modern design for use on this line. These cars can be operated at a much lower cost than steam trains and the board hope that with these vehicles it will be possible to give more suitable and more frequent passenger train services.

The cost of the four rail cars complete is estimated to be about £34,000.
