Vol. 123 No. 8

- Use of Steel in Building.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that carpenters employed on housing schemes in certain areas in the country are refusing to handle steel frames for windows and doors, and whether he will take this matter up with the men's unions with a view to having it remedied.

I am aware that the circumstances referred to by the Deputy have arisen in two areas in relation to steel frames for windows. The selection of the type of window to be used on any particular housing scheme is primarily a matter for the local authority concerned and any question involving labour arising out of the choice of window types might best be dealt with locally as between the unions concerned and the local authority.

I am, however, prepared to cooperate in any way that may seem likely to assist the prospects of a settlement in such cases and in one particular case I have already arranged to send representatives of my Department to contact the several parties in an effort to secure a solution.
