Vol. 123 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Home Clothing.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that in some county homes the young inmates are supplied with clothing of an objectionable nature; and, if so, whether he will have this practice discontinued and these young persons provided with suitable clothing at an early date.

I am aware that in some instances children in county homes are supplied with clothing which is readily recognisable as that provided for residents in a home. In a circular which I recently caused to be issued to local authorities, this matter was referred to and I recommended that in the provision of clothes for residents of county homes uniformity either in colour or pattern should be avoided. I also urged that full advantage should be taken of the varieties of clothes which are available bearing in mind that durability of the garments should not be the sole criterion when ordering supplies.

During the current week an exhibition of the various clothing materials and the types of made-up clothing available from the official contractors is being held in Dublin.

I am glad to have this opportunity of appealing to Deputies who may be in a position to influence decisions in this matter to use their influence in giving effect to this very desirable but quite inexpensive reform.
