Vol. 124 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Milling Report

asked the Minister for Agriculture when he will be in a position to make a complete statement concerning the recommendations embodied in the report on flour milling which was circulated before the Christmas recess.

In a statement which was circulated to Deputies with the report of the flour and bread inquiry, it was stated that:

Nine recommendations had been accepted by the Government and were being implemented;

Six recommendations had not been adopted by the Government;

Twenty-six recommendations were to be examined further by the flour and bread branch of the Department of Agriculture, two of these recommendations having been accepted in principle by the Government.

The examination of the 26 recommendations is still proceeding. Several of these involve considerations which could not be correctly evaluated until satisfactory costings were available. The establishment of a uniform costings system in all the mills is at present proceeding in consultation with a costs accountant acting on my behalf, and when this system is in general operation each outstanding recommendation of the inquiry will be implemented or reviewed in the light of such additional information as this costings system may provide.

Can the Minister inform the Dáil how long a substantial portion of this is going to remain with the Rank combine?

Silence is the most eloquent reply.
