Vol. 124 No. 5

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alien Employees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a large number of aliens are employed in furriers' establishments in the Dublin City area to the detriment of Irish workers, and that the conditions of employment and rates of wages in many of these factories are unsatisfactory; and, if so, what steps he intends taking to remedy the situation.

I am not aware that a big number of aliens are employed in furriers' establishments in the Dublin City area to the detriment of Irish workers. No original or renewed employment permits under the Aliens Order, 1946, are at present valid for such workers.

No complaints have been made to me regarding the wages or other conditions of employment in this trade.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this is a trade in which the workers are completely unorganised?

The remedy is available to the workers if they want to take it.

The questions remaining on the Order Paper will appear on to-morrow's Order Paper.
