Vol. 131 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Tuam.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that extensive building schemes, which have been in operation for some time past in the town of Tuam, have now been completed, with resultant unemployment to many of the operatives involved; and, if so, whether in the circumstances, he will outline the steps he proposes to take in relief of the position.

I am aware of the position to which the Deputy refers.

I am informed that it is unlikely that there will be any new building operations carried out in Tuam in the immediate future either by the local authority or by Departments of State. There are, however, very substantial housing and hospital schemes in progress in Galway City.

As regards private building the Deputy is, no doubt, aware that there are now no restrictions in respect of such building.
