Vol. 134 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arrest and Extradition.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is true that Mr. James Anwar Mufty was arrested at Naas, as reported in the daily newspapers of the 4th November, 1952, or at some other place in the Republic of Ireland; and, if so, whether he will state if that person is an Irish citizen and the circumstances of his arrest, whether he was brought before a court in this country, where and why and by what authority he was handed over to the police or military authorities of another country, and also if he was given any opportunity or facilities for objecting against his arrest and removal from the jurisdiction of our courts and what compensation or other redress will be given to him in view of the fact that he was so removed from the jurisdiction of our courts on a charge on which he has been later found not guilty by a foreign court.

The person in question, who is not an Irish citizen, was arrested by members of the Garda Síochána, in accordance with powers conferred by law, on foot of a warrant issued by an English court on a charge of murder. While in custody he made no request to see a solicitor.
