asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (1) the number of persons who applied for compensation under Section 35 of the Fisheries Act, 1939, (2) the number awarded compensation, (3) the number of applications disallowed and why the latter applicants were not notified of the decision, and (4) when it is proposed to pay compensation to successful applicants; furthermore, if he is aware of the hardship imposed on the fishermen by the delay in dealing with this matter; and, if so, if he will expedite payment.

The particulars requested are as follows:—(1) 284; (2) 56; (3) four; rejection in each case has been notified to the claimant; (4) compensation has been paid in 44 cases. Offers have been accepted in 12 cases, but payment is awaiting clearance of certain legal requirements.

Eleven applications are still under consideration under the Fisheries Act, 1939.

Two hundred and thirteen applications were adjudged ineligible underthat Act, but were accepted for consideration under the Freshwater Fisheries (Prohibition of Netting) Act, 1951. Claims are being dealt with as quickly as possible.
