Vol. 139 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Clare-Dalgan River.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will now state when it is hoped to commence the drainage of the Clare-Dalgan river.

A drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945 for the Corrib-Clare catchment area which includes the Clare-Dalgan river, will shortly be exhibited in accordance with the Act. Pending compliance with the statutory requirements as regards exhibition and confirmation of the scheme, I am not in a position to give a definite date for commencement of the works.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say if it will be any time this year?

As the Deputy understands, the number of small holders in the Corrib catchment area is far greater than the number in any other catchment area, and consequently a great deal of time will be taken up in serving notices on these people and so on in compliance with the statutory regulations. Their observations must be awaited and time will also be taken up in dealing with the three county councils concerned, Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

May I ask Deputy Seán Flanagan is he anticipating a general election?

The Deputy does not want any.
