Vol. 139 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of the lands of Garrett Nally which are in the hands of the Land Commission (a) the acreage set in conacre this yearand last year, and (b) the average price per acre of such conacre this year and last year.

In 1952, 28½ acres were let in tillage and 22½ acres in meadow at average prices of £2 4s. 0d. and £6 9s. 0d. per acre, respectively.

This year 28 acres of rehabilitated land have been let in tillage at an average price of £5 4s. 0d. per acre.

Was the same number let out in conacre in 1953 as in 1952?

Yes. There was an arrangement about grazing last year. The demand for tillage at a reasonable price in this area is not satisfactory.

Will the Minister say when he intends to have this land which was acquired some years ago allocated to congests or tenants migrating from congested areas into this particular area?

Is it not a fact that in November, 1952, the Minister indicated to the Land Commission that he would like the Land Commission to let out more of the land in their possession in conacre than they had in the previous year?

Is the Minister satisfied that the Land Commission have in fact carried out that direction?

As the Deputy knows, the Land Commission are only one party to the letting.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what stage has been reached in the proceedings to acquire the lands of Mrs. Margaret Walsh, Brownstown estate.

Proceedings for the acquisition of these lands have reached the final stage and it is expected that possession will be taken during the current financial year.
