Vol. 142 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Cheap Footwear Schemes.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the total number of vouchers issued by the Dublin Board of Assistance for cheap footwear from the 1st September, 1953, to date.

A total of 2,520 vouchers were issued by the Dublin Board of Assistance under the Public Assistance Footwear Scheme between the 1st September, 1953, and the 7th November, 1953.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that very many applications have been made by suitable persons and that the applications have been checked and investigated and for some reason there has been delay in issuing the vouchers although supplies of boots are in the shops, and is there any explanation?

Vouchers were issued before the proper time to get rid of surplus stocks of boots, old stocks, in the Department. They were issued in September a couple of months before the usual time.

But is it correct that vouchers have been held up within the past two months which should be issued?

That is the position.
