Vol. 151 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry County Council.

asked the Taoiseach whether he has received a resolution, which was passed by the Kerry County Council on 2nd May, 1955, in regard to a statement, made by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Local Government, urging the people to abolish the Kerry County Council, and, if so, if he will state the terms of the resolution, and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I have received a copy of the resolution of the Kerry County Council referred to in the question. The terms of the resolution have been published in the newspapers, and it is unnecessary to repeat them here.

The Parliamentary Secretary did not, as is suggested in the wording both of the Deputy's question and of the resolution, urge the people to abolish the Kerry County Council.

I am personally aware of the zealous manner in which the Parliamentary Secretary discharges his duties and his enthusiasm for speeding up housing throughout the country.

The members of the Kerry County Council, in an interview which I had with them recently, detailed to me the achievements of the council in dealing with their housing problems. I have no doubt that the members of the council are sincerely anxious to settle those problems and to provide the houses necessary for their people.

While differences of opinion may exist as to the methods to be employed, I suggest that, as it is apparent that both the county councillors and the Parliamentary Secretary are agreed on the objective to be attained, frank discussions between them would go far to settle the questions of methods and procedure requisite to solve the problems. There is no reason why such discussions should not take place and so put an end to controversy.
