Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Link Facilities: South East Ireland.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the telephone trunk facilities in South East Ireland, including the Wexford area, are totally inadequate in relation to the facilities available and under contract in all other areas, and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I do not agree that the position is as suggested by the Deputy. The South East of the country is served by the Waterford Branch of the southern co-axial trunk cable over which a no-delay telephone service is ordinarily available. The trunk circuiting of the surrounding areas, which includes Wexford, compares favourably with the position in areas served or shortly to be served by other main cables, such as the South West, West and North West.

If the Deputy will furnish me with particulars of any specific complaints concerning the trunk telephone facilities in the South East, I shall be glad to have them investigated.

Could the Minister indicate if it is intended to have any new trunk facilities laid down in that area?

In addition, the routes from Enniscorthy to Gorey and Arklow are each being reinforced by three additional circuits.
