Vol. 155 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Native Fuel.

asked the Minister for Finance what progress is being made in the matter of having native fuel used for the heating of all Government buildings in Dublin and elsewhere.

As I have already informed the Deputy in reply to the question which he addressed to me on the 8th February last, it is the general policy to use native fuels to the greatest possible extent for purposes of heating in Government offices and buildings, and quantitatively the amount of native fuels used is very much greater than the amount of imported fuel. In regard to the investigation to which I referred in my reply it has been decided to install on a test basis in a selected building a burner designed to use native anthracite waste. It is expected that this installation will be in operation at an early date.

I wonder would the Parliamentary Secretary assure the House that he has given concentrated thought to the possibility of supplying fuel and energy to all Government buildings through the agency of atomic power?

I have not at the moment considered such. It is not required on this side of the House but it might be on that side. If that side of the House had used it in Kerry, it might have helped.
