Vol. 159 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Galway Postal Service Reorganisation.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state (a) whether the reorganisation of the postal services in the various townlands in West Galway has been completed, (b) the townlands in which the revised postal arrangements are now in operation, and (c) the number of postmen who have been placed on overtime as a result of such reorganisation, and when payment will be made in respect of such overtime.

The reorganisation of postal services in West Galway has been completed except for minor adjustments where posts are not working to schedule.

A six-day frequency of postal delivery is now given in all parts of West Galway. The townlands particularly affected by the reorganisation are those served from the following subpost offices where deliveries were formerly restricted to three or four days per week:—

Barna, Cashel, Carna, Inverin, Kilkerrin, Leenane, Lettermore, Lettermullen, Moycullen and Spiddal.

No postman has been scheduled to perform overtime as a result of the reorganisation. As indicated in the opening part of the reply, however, some posts are not operating to schedule. The work of testing such posts, with a view to establishing whether adjustments in attendances are necessary, is proceeding. Where a test shows that extra time on a post is justified an appropriate increase in wages, including payment of arrears, is granted. The testing is being undertaken as quickly as possible.
