Vol. 160 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Atomic Energy Committee.

asked the Taoiseach whether he has yet received any preliminary report from the Atomic Energy Committee, and if he can indicate what progress it is making in its work.

While the Government have not yet received any report from the Atomic Energy Committee, I understand from the committee that appreciable progress has, to date, been made in regard to certain aspects of their terms of reference.

The first meeting of the committee was held in April last, and their terms of reference, which were published at the time, are of a comprehensive character. I understand that the committee's further studies, preliminary to the submission of a report, will necessarily require to embrace a more detailed examination of the latest research-reactor projects and developments abroad than the committee have so far had an opportunity of undertaking.

I wonder could the Taoiseach indicate whether the committee has any direct access to or representation on the various international bodies set up by the O.E.E.C. for the examination and documentation of the same problems?

They would have access to, but no representation on any of these committees.

Do they even have access to the documentation?

I imagine so. I shall inquire about that.
