Vol. 161 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence : Appointments and Transfers.

asked the Minister for Defence if he has cancelled any appointments or transfers made by his predecessor, and, if so, if he will state the particulars thereof and the circumstances in which he took such action.

A nomination has been made to replace an existing member of the Advisory Committee under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, as from the 1st May, 1957. Steps have also been taken to replace the existing Judge Advocate-General as from the 1st August, 1957.

Section 6 of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, provides that the Advisory Committee shall include two members being persons who held high rank in the Forces before the 11th July, 1921. Both the present members under that category are pensioners under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924. It would be more appropriate that one should be a person to whom the Act of 1924 applies and the other a person to whom the Military Service Act, 1934 applies. That is the purpose of the first change I have mentioned.

The purpose of the second is to rectify a position brought about in September, 1954, of which the Deputy is no doubt aware.

He is not, strange as it may seem.
