asked the Minister for Defence if he will take steps to expedite decisions on applications for special allowances under the Army Pensions Acts.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pensions: Special Allowances.
There is no avoidable delay in dealing with applications for special allowances under the Army Pensions Acts, but owing to the nature and extent of the investigations required before deciding claims, decisions cannot always be given as promptly as I would like. I shall, however, do everything possible to expedite the work.
I assume that the Deputy has in mind mainly applications from persons who are claiming by virtue of having been granted the Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar. In such cases it is necessary to establish that the medal was duly awarded. Old I.R.A. officers who are asked by my Department for reports on this aspect can materially help in reducing delays by replying promptly.
I would like, with your permission, to raise a matter of importance on the Adjournment, namely, the right of fishermen from the occupied portion of Ireland to fish within the exclusive fishing limits of Ireland.
I shall communicate with the Deputy in the course of the afternoon.
