Vol. 161 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio-Controlled Hackney Cars.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he has issued licences to hackney firms in respect of signalling stations which are capable of being used for the purpose of communicating with ships at sea.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether fees are charged by his Department in respect of distribution from broadcasting stations maintained by hackney firms.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state under what section of the Wireless Telegraphy Acts licences have been granted to radio-controlled hackneys to have apparatus for wireless telegraphy in their possession.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state under what terms and conditions licences have been granted to radio-controlled hackneys.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state whether an advisory committee is in existence under Section 19 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926, and, if so, whether it has been consulted regarding the radio-controlled hackneys.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 together. Licences have been granted under Section 5 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926, as amended by the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1956, in respect of wireless telegraphy apparatus comprising fixed or base stations and mobile stations fitted in certain hackney vehicles. The terms and conditions of the licences which cover both transmission and reception and for which the appropriate licence fees have been paid, are in accordance with those specified in the Wireless Telegraphy (Business Radio Licence) Regulations, 1949 and 1956. The frequencies and power permitted are such that communication with ships at sea is not normally practicable. In any event such communication would be a breach of the conditions of the licences. The question of consulting the advisory committee referred to by the Deputies did not arise as Section 19 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926, limits the functions of this committee to matters relating to public broadcasting which is not involved in the licensing of private business radio systems.
