Vol. 162 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Moy Drainage Scheme.

andMr. Rogers asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the losses and hardships endured by the farming community in Mayo and Sligo on account of the flooding of their lands, he will take steps to implement proposals already submitted to his Department for the drainage of the River Moy.

No proposals for the drainage of the River Moy have been submitted to the Minister for Finance since his approval was given in July, 1951, to the undertaking of the survey of that catchment. The survey which was begun in April, 1952, has been completed and the desing and preparation of a draft scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, are proceeding. Pending completion of the draft scheme and compliance with the statutory requirements no indication can be given as to when work can be started.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state how long it will take from the time works commence until they are completed?

After the works start?

I would expect about seven years.

The Deputy has not begun to "crack" yet.

The Board of Works must be doing the job.
