Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Marine Works.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the date on which a grant was made available for the erection of a landing slip at Curransport, Country Donegal, the amount of such grant, and the cause of the delay in erecting the slipway.

A grant of nor more than 75 per cent. of ting a landing at £2,250, of erecting a landing slip at Curransport was approved on the 4th Aught, 1955, and the Donegal County Council agreed to bear the balance of the cost. They were asked to carry out the work but they indicated that they were not in a position to do so. The Commissioners of Public Works have since agreed to do the work, which will be undertaken as soon as present commitments permit.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the date on which Donegal County Council were notified of a grant for the improvement of Magherarorarty peir, County Donegal, the amount of the grant, and the cause of the delay in effecting the improvements.

The sanction of the Minister for Finance to the offering of a grant of £4,875 or 75 per cent of the cost of the proposed works (whichever is the lesser) to the Donegal County Council towards the cost (estimated at £6,500) of improving the pier at Magheraroarty was given on 2nd November, 1954. This sanction was subject to the usual conditions as to local contribution and responsibility for future maintenance of the completed works. Notification to this effect was sent to the Donegal County Council on 9th Novemebr,1954. The country council accepted the conditions by letter dated 12th January,1955.

The work will be carried out by the Commissioners of Public Works but before it can be put in hands it will be necessary for the county council to acquire the fee simple interest in two small areas of land adjoining the existing pier for the purpose of improving the facilities for tuninig lorries and for boat storage. The country council were asked on 11th March, 1955 to acquire this land. The matter of title to part of the land in question has so far prevented the council from acquiring it but it is understood that they have taken steps to expedite acquisition.

If this matter were cleared up, the Commissioners of Public Works could, as their programme stands at present, start work at Magheraroarty immediately.
