Vol. 163 No. 5

Committee on Finance. - Vote 7—Office of the Revenue Commissioners.

I move:—

That a sum not exceeding £1,300,500 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1958, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Revenue Commissioners, including certain other Services administered by that Office.

In the West the people receive gift parcels and very often there is a very high tax put on them. These parcels contain secondhand clothing from relatives in the United States and England. Would the Minister consider a reduction in the taxes in respect of such parcels?

I think it would have been better had the Deputy raised this matter on the Vote for the Department of Industry and Commerce. The Revenue Commissioners must collect whatever it lays down. The matter could not be considered on this Estimate. The tariff put on these articles is more a matter for the Department of Industry and Commerce. However, I shall make a note of it and see if anything can be done.

I wonder would I be in order in referring to the P.A.Y.E. system on this Estimate?

Would that not be a matter for legislation?

I think it would be better to take it on the Estimate for the Minister's office.

It is a matter of general administration in connection with Vote 6.

Vote put and agreed to.
