Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Employment Schemes in North Kerry.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the allocations sanctioned by the Special Employment Schemes Office in the period 1st April to 30th November, 1957, in respect of (i) minor employment schemes, (ii) bog development schemes, and (iii) rural improvement schemes, in each electoral area of the North Kerry constituency, i.e. the rural districts of Dingle, Listowel, and Tralee; (b) the number of such schemes which have been put in hands during the week ended 30th November, 1957; (c) the average number of persons called to work and employed at that date on each scheme, and the average percentage of the current unemployment register absorbed on the said scheme; and (d) the weekly rate of wages paid to the ordinary workers, and to the charge hands, namely, gangers and supervising gangers.

As the reply is in tabular form I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

(a) Allocations sanctioned by the Special Employment Schemes Office in the period 1st April, 1957 to 30th November, 1957, in respect of minor employment, bog development and rural improvement schemes in the rural districts of Dingle, Listowel and Tralee.

(b) The number of such schemes which have been put in hands during the week ended 30th November, 1957: 20 Minor Employment Schemes, 4 Bog Development Schemes and 4 Rural Improvements Schemes were in progress during the week ended 30th November, 1957, total 28, of which 8 were started during the week.

(c) The average number of persons called to work and employed at that date on each scheme and the average percentage of the current unemployment register absorbed on the said scheme.

The answer to the first part of this section of the Question is in the table above. The figures do not include the gangers. Data is not available to answer the second half of this part of the Question.
