Vol. 165 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Haulage of Wheat and Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce legislation to prohibit the haulage of wheat in the wheat growing areas to any mill but that nearest to the grower, and thus cut down the costs of flour production.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce legislation to prohibit the wasteful haulage by millers and bakers of wheat and bread outside a limited area.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce legislation to prevent bakeries from hauling bread from the big cities, such as Dublin and Cork, to the Midlands area, or to any area outside a ten miles limit.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to take Questions Nos. 4, 5 and 6 together.

As regards wheat deliveries to mills, the principal objective in the harvest is to get the wheat off the growers' hands without avoidable delay, and restriction of delivery to the mill nearest the grower would lead to delay and confusion. The availability of drying and storage facilities has also to be taken into account.

As regards deliveries of flour and bread, the aim is to encourage competition. Restrictions of the kind proposed would have the opposite effect apart from the practical difficulties of their enforcement.
