Vol. 165 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Postal Services.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state whether it is his intention to cut postal services in Galway City, and, if so, the nature of such cuts, and what redundancy (if any) will be caused by them.

A general revision of postal services in Galway City is not being undertaken nor is it contemplated. Parcel delivery arrangements are, however, being examined in the light of traffic and handling costs. At this stage I am not in a position to forecast the outcome of the examination but, at most, one head of staff would be retrenched and no permanent employee would be displaced.

Is the Minister aware that when postal charges were half present charges, we had much better services, and is he further aware that now that the traffic has doubled in the Galway area, a tourist area, he should take steps to give better services?

That is a different thing altogether.
