Vol. 167 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenditure on Anti-Cancer Services.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give particulars of the total expenditure from (a) central, (b) local and (c) Hospital Trust funds in respect of anti-cancer services for (i) capital and (ii) current purposes in the years 1948-49 to 1956-57, inclusive.

Services for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer are provided in general hospitals and other institutions as well as in hospitals designated "cancer hospitals", and conversely hospitals so designated cater for patients other than cancer patients. The financial records of health authorities do not contain separate accounts of expenditure in respect of patients receiving treatment for cancer at the expense of those authorities. For these reasons it would not be possible to determine the expenditure incurred solely in respect of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
