Vol. 171 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Clare Coroner.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state (a) the name of the coroner recently appointed to the West Clare district, (b) whether the person appointed holds any other public appointments and, if so, what these appointments are and what total emoluments he receives in respect of them, (c) how many persons presented themselves for appointment to the post, (d) whether any or all of such persons held the required qualifications, and (e) what legal qualifications or experience are held by the new appointee.

The answer is as follows: (a) Dr. Patrick J. Hillery; (b) I have no official knowledge of any other public appointments except that of Garda Medical Attendant in Miltown Malbay for which Dr. Hillery was the only applicant and in respect of which his fees on a capitation basis amounted to £4 18s. from his appointment to the end of November, 1958; (c) the appointment of coroner is made through the medium of the local appointments commissioners. I have no knowledge therefore of the number of persons who presented themselves; (d) same information as at (c); (e) the new appointee is qualified to act as coroner in accordance with the provisions of Sections 2 of the Coroners Ireland Act, 1881.
