Vol. 178 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - St. Luke's Hospital, Dublin: Cobalt Unit.

10.

asked the Minister for Health when the decision was made to instal a cobalt unit in St. Luke's Hospital, Dublin; and when the installation will take place.

The proposal of the Cancer Association of Ireland to instal a Cobalt Unit in St. Luke's Hospital was approved in principle in April, 1958, subject to the condition that arrangements would be made to the satisfaction of the two other cancer hospitals in Dublin for the treatment at St. Luke's Hospital of such of their patients as might require cobalt treatment. Some time elapsed before those arrangements were finalised. The problem of financing this comparatively costly project also required consideration and it was not found possible to come to a definite decision on this aspect of the matter until very recently.

Planning of the building to house the new unit is now in hands and it is anticipated that the unit will be in operation before the end of the coming year.
