Vol. 187 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - District Court Prosecutions Costs.

11.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Justice the total estimated cost to the State in fees and other expenses of (1) the first District Court case against Mr. Singer, (2) The Rose Tattoo case and (3) alleged frauds in connection with the supply of wool.

With regard to part (1) of the Question I would refer the Deputy to the answer to Questions Nos. 20 and 21 on the 31st May, 1960, in which the cost in the Paul Singer case was given as £5,500. In addition to that figure, I am informed that costs awarded to the accused were £580.

No special expenses were incurred by my Department in connection with the cases referred to in part (2) and part (3) of the Question, apart from the normal salaries of Gardaí and other full-time officials, who devoted broken periods of time to the cases as part of their normal duties. I am informed that fees and expenses defrayed from other official sources came to £1,790 in connection with case No. 2 and to £500 in connection with case No. 3.
