Vol. 193 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transfer of Mayo Uneconomic Holders.

56.

asked the Minister for Lands the number of uneconomic landholders transferred from Ballycroy, County Mayo, in each of the past five years, and the number likely to be transferred this year.

No migrations were effected from the Ballycroy district during the past five years and none are contemplated this year.

No applications were received by the Land Commission for migration from the area in question.

Would the Minister say that there are no congested townlands in that area which need attention, without application to the Land Commission by the tenants ?

I did not so suggest. I know the area consists of scattered mountainy farms. What I am pointing out is that the Land Commission have in fact received no applications from the area for migration.

Do I take it that the migration depends to a great extent now on applications by the tenants themselves rather than on the normal work of the Land Commission in settling congestion ?

That seems to be a separate question.

The Deputy may take no such thing. As the Deputy is aware, some areas are more congested than others and naturally the people willing to migrate, and who so apply, get priority in certain instances.
