Vol. 195 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishery Training.

18.

asked the Minister for Lands whether, further to his statement in the Programme of Sea Fisheries Development that a campaign will be undertaken to bring the training facilities in fishing to the notice of potential applicants, he will give an account of the type of campaign which it is proposed to undertake.

Information about the training facilities is constantly being disseminated by my Department and An Bord Iascaigh Mhara. The co-operation of educational authorities is also enlisted. The facilities are publicised from time to time through the newspapers, radio and television and at suitable shows and exhibitions.

I am considering what further methods might be adopted and shall be glad to receive suggestions from the Deputy.

19.

asked the Minister for Lands whether, further to his statement in the Programme of Sea Fisheries Development that a special training course will be provided for boys over sixteen years of age who would like to make sea fishing their career, any decision has yet been made as to where this course will be located; and, if not, what factors will be taken into consideration in choosing a location for such a course.

The statement to which the Deputy refers goes on to say that, in addition to the usual training under experienced skippers on selected fishing boats, there will be a special course on a training vessel. These fishing boats operate from several ports and the location of the training vessel will depend on the type of vessel to be selected and the facilities available at various centres.
