Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Steel Holdings Production.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has enquired into the reasons why all production, other than the production of galvanised iron, has ceased at Irish Steel Holdings, Haulbowline, County Cork; if he has ascertained how many men have lost employment as a result of this step; how many, if any, export orders have been lost thereby; and if he can indicate when production on the former scale will be resumed.

I have been notified by the company that for a period in September/October, 1962, the only production unit in operation at Haulbowline was the galvanised plant and that this was anticipated and was inevitable during the course of installation of new plant; that between August, 1962, and the end of October, 1962, employment in the industry was reduced from 849 to 716; that no export orders have been lost to the company thereby; and that it is anticipated that the company's production of saleable products will be at least as great as heretofore within one month.
