Vol. 197 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roads into Housing Schemes.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the responsibility of local authorities for maintenance and repair of roads leading into housing schemes; and if he will indicate if any instructions have been issued by his Department in regard to this matter.

Road authorities are required by law to maintain all the public roads within their charge whether such roads provide access to housing schemes or not. It is a matter exclusively for each road authority to decide whether any particular road which is not maintainable by them should be declared a public road pursuant to the powers conferred by the Local Government Act, 1953, and I have no power to interfere with their discretion in the exercise of such powers.
