Vol. 198 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Release of Political Prisoners.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he is satisfied that there is no reason to believe that there will be any renewal of organised armed attacks in the Six Counties; and if he will make representations to the Minister for Home Affairs in the Six Counties to release all political prisoners before Christmas.

The Government's decision in March last to release all prisoners in custody here for offences against the State was taken in the hope and belief that unlawful organised violence on the Border has come to an end. While I feel sure that the exercise, at this stage, of similar clemency by the Government of Northern Ireland would only have good effects, I do not consider that the direct approach suggested by the Deputy would be appropriate.

I am satisfied with the Taoiseach's gesture and I hope the Northern Minister will take note of it.
