Vol. 200 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Safety Precautions at Inniscarra (Cork) Dam.

36.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if there is any warning system installed at the Inniscarra dam outside Cork city by which the citizens of Cork shall be warned in good time in the event of a collapse of structure at the dam; what safety provisions are in use at the dam; and whether his attention has been drawn to the views of a well-known Swiss engineer who informed the Institution of Civil Engineers in London on 19th February that warning systems against dam disasters should be maintained.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that there is no warning system provided at the Inniscarra dam of the type referred to by the Deputy nor do the Board consider such a warning system necessary. As I indicated in reply to a similar question by the Deputy on 10th December, 1959, the Board provides systematic control, inspection and maintenance of all dams built in connection with hydro-electric schemes.
