Vol. 200 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Traffic Regulations.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Road Traffic (Speed Limits) Regulations, 1963 have been designed to define the Austin A.40 as a station wagon.

I take it that the Deputy refers to the application of the ordinary speed limit of 50 miles per hour to single-deck buses and other vehicles having seating passenger accommodation for more than eight persons. Obviously this does not apply to the vehicle he mentions in his question.

Is there not some provision in the regulations referring to a movable back seat as one of the criteria by which the vehicle is deemed to be, for the purpose of the regulations, a station wagon, and does this characteristic not occur in the A40, even though it is not in the accepted sense of the word a station wagon?

What the Deputy says is true. However, there is the little bit added on which makes all the difference, that is, that the passenger seating accommodation exceeds eight in number.

Both characteristics must be present?
