Vol. 200 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports to UK of Argentine Beef.

7.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has noted the large imports to the United Kingdom of processed beef from the Argentine in recent weeks; if he considers that such imports are responsible for the poor prices obtaining in fairs and markets throughout the country recently; and, if so, if he will take action to remedy the situation.

I am aware that shipments of Argentine beef to Britain have increased and that this has had some effect on market prices in the latter country. It should be clear that there is no action I can take in the matter.

Would the Minister not consider looking for a wider trade agreement?

I do not understand.

The question indicates that the prices are not too good because of beef coming into the United Kingdom which means, possibly, that the market is deteriorating there. Would the Minister not consider looking for a wider trade agreement or looking somewhere else?

Of course, that is something that is constantly being sought after.

It would not appear to be very successful from the results.

Even if success does not attend the effort, what can you do about it?

Keep on trying.

That is what I think I have said.
