Vol. 200 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Drain Dam.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that in the main road improvement works being done by the Meath County Council at Burfield, Clonard, a dam has been put across a drain, which has resulted in the water level being raised twelve inches and the course of the drain being changed, leaving it hard to drain the land of a local man (name supplied); and what action it is proposed to take to remedy the matter, as the man in question has spent money draining his land.

The matter at issue is not one for me to decide. I understand that the Meath County Council are considering representations received on behalf of the landowner in question.

Would the Minister say if the scheme is being carried out in accordance with the regulations laid down by his Department?

I thought it was the complaint the Deputy was concerned about. I have nothing on the scheme.

Is it not a fact that the Department's engineer has okayed the manner in which the scheme was carried out, including the dam?

The trouble is between the farmer and the county council.

Would the Minister suggest that any of these schemes can be carried out without being okayed by the Department?

This is a question of interference with drainage which is a side affect of a road widening scheme. The farmer says that it could have been done without interference with the drainage. It is a matter between the farmer and the county council at the moment and I would not like to interfere.
