Vol. 200 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Road Grants.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will increase the road grants to County Wexford to offset the rigour of the Winter, which has had an adverse effect on the road surfaces throughout the county.

I am not aware that the recent severe weather has given rise to road reconstruction or renewal problems in Wexford, or elsewhere, which cannot be dealt with under the normal resources of county councils, including their Road Fund Grants. In the case of Wexford county council these grants amount to £294,526 in the current financial year. The amount of the Main Road Upkeep grant payable to any county council will take into account expenditure on the maintenance of main roads made necessary in the current financial year, as a result of damage by weather conditions.

Is the Minister aware that wholesale damage has been caused to the road between Wexford and Gorey and that about 12 miles of that road, which is much used by tourists coming from Rosslare, will cost thousands of pounds to repair. In view of the importance of that road, would he not consider giving some grant for its repair?

I am not aware that serious road damage exists in Wexford or in any other county. It may exist but I am not aware of it.

Would the Minister like to visit the area and see for himself the condition of this 12 miles of road?

I will take the word of the Deputy and the council for it. If he will send up the particulars, I shall have the road inspected.
