Vol. 200 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sales of Trading Stamps.

9.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the activities of non-nationals in the promotion of sales of trading stamps, and, in particular, of the methods used to recruit sales staff and of the exploitation and hardship caused thereby; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to eliminate such happenings.

I have seen press reports about the activities of trading stamp companies but I have had no complaints that these activities are in contravention of any legislation in respect of which I have a function.

In general, the method of recruiting and the conditions of employment— apart from the question of holidays— of the employees involved are not regulated by statute.

In the circumstances, the second part of the question does not arise.

Is the Minister aware that men have been induced to leave good jobs by promises of choice working conditions which proved false and misleading? Is he further aware that this so-called stamp trading is no more than a parasitic racket the inevitable effect of which must be to raise the cost of living and to foist higher prices upon the consuming public?

I shall pass on the information to the Minister.

When will the Minister be here?

He is not far away; he is engaged in the Seanad.

Will he be here to-morrow?

I imagine so.

I shall take it up with him tomorrow.
