Vol. 204 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Second Employment Period Order.

6.

asked the Taoiseach the total estimated decrease in the live register of unemployed persons since last month, owing to the introduction of the Second Employment Period Order.

7.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people precluded from the receipt of unemployment assistance as a result of the making of the Second Employment Period Order, on the basis of the numbers in receipt of unemployment assistance for the month ended 30th June, 1963.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Question No. 6 and No. 7 together. The Second Employment Period Order, 1963, which excludes certain categories of persons from the receipt of Unemployment Assistance, came into operation on the 12 June, 1963. Between 8 June, 1963, and 29 June, 1963, the number of applicants for Unemployment Assistance declined by 7,171. While it is clear that the introduction of the Second Employment Period Order was the dominant factor in this decline, it is not possible to measure its effect precisely.

A certain number of the persons who are precluded from the receipt of Unemployment Assistance by the Second Employment Period Order continue to register and are included in the total live register figure in the category "persons other than claimants to unemployment benefit or applicants for unemployment assistance". Between 8 June, 1963, and 29 June, 1963, the total number of persons in this category on the live register increased by 1,656.
