Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase in Coal Prices.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he had notice of the considerable increase in coal prices imposed by merchants in recent months; whether he is satisfied that such increases are justified; and if he has considered invoking price control legislation in this matter.

I am advised that the increases recently announced in the various types of coal are attributable to increases in costs outside the control of the trade. These include increases in import price of coal and in freight and handling charges. Having regard to the competition that exists within the coal trade and between coal and other fuels, I am not satisfied that there is any useful purpose to be served by the imposition of statutory price control.
