Vol. 207 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pay Increase.

41.

asked the Minister for Defence if the recently announced pay award for 27,000 civil servants applies also to the Army personnel.

The Civil Service pay increase of 12 per cent will be applied to the Defence Forces as from 1st February. The details of its application are under active consideration, and an announcement will be made at the earliest possible moment.

The reply would not have anything to do with the Kildare by-election, by any chance? The Minister would not be inspired?

Would the Minister say where the date 1st February came from? Did somebody put his hand to his ear and snap his fingers and take down 1st February? The date of the agreement was 1st January. The date of ratification was 15th January. Where did the date 1st February come from, then?

Balbriggan.

That is the date from which the civil servants got it.

If the Minister for Defence does not want to do it, would the Minister for Finance say when it was agreed?

Put a question down. Do not be so pugnacious.

It was agreed with the Civil Service.

Who agreed?

I agreed.

Why did the Civil Service discuss something that was already agreed on with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions?

It was an obvious tip-off.

The Government will not get away with that with the ordinary workers.

Do not show yourself so annoyed.

Keep off the doctors.

Maybe they will resolve to give up seats for Lent.
