Vol. 207 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Pensioners.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that a number of CIE pensioners are in receipt of only twelve shillings per week; and if an amended superannuation scheme, which will provide for increased pensions, has been submitted to him for approval.

I am so aware. No amended superannuation scheme, which will provide for increased pensions, has been submitted to me for approval.

May I remind the Deputy that on December 3rd, 1963, the Dáil passed the following motion:

That Dáil Éireann is of the opinion that taking account of the establishment in June, 1963, of the Commission to examine the pension schemes and the sickness benefit payments for the regular wages grade staffs of CIE consideration of the position of the existing pensioners should be deferred pending receipt and consideration of the Commission's report".

Does the Minister not think he is a little dishonest because the Commission's terms of reference does not include these people about whom the Deputy is asking?

Obviously the levels of pensions for superannuated men must bear some relationship to current pensions. It is reasonable to expect that they should. We had hoped to get the report from the Commission at an early date; now it is hoped that it will be available some time round March 31st.

Will that include the people who came out in 1946, 1947 and 1948 and who have only 12/- a week?

It was made clear during the debate here that we would then consider the position of these people in the light of this report.

God help them if they are waiting the Minister's consideration; they will die from hunger.
