Vol. 208 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Tests.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if tests proceeding on Irish-grown wheat have produced any variety superior to Atle, from the point of view of farmers and millers.

The wheat breeding programme being carried out by my Department has resulted in the production of a promising new variety, Quern. This variety has been thoroughly tested throughout the country over several years and has proved superior to Atle, in yield, resistance to lodging and disease. It is a few days later in maturing than Atle.

In milling and baking tests carried out by An Foras Talúntais, Quern has proved superior to Atle in milling quality, but appears to be slightly inferior in baking quality.

Quern was released in 1963 under the Department's Seed Certification Scheme and seed will be available commercially next Spring.
