Vol. 209 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thomas Davis Statue.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance what progress has been made towards the erection of a statue to Thomas Davis at College Green, Dublin.

As I indicated in the course of my introductory statement on the Estimate for Public Works and Buildings last week, a commission has been placed with the sculptor, Mr. Edward Delaney, for the preparation of a bronze statue of Davis to be erected in College Green, Dublin on a paved platform measuring about 55 feet by 18 feet by 9 inches high. The platform will also contain a circular pool embellished with bronze reliefs depicting Young Ireland. The sculptor is at present engaged on the preparation of the full size plaster model of the statue prior to having it cast in bronze. This is a matter which cannot be hurried but it is hoped that the model will be ready for casting about the end of this year.

At this stage it is not possible to say when the project will be completed but I can assure the Deputy that there will be no avoidable delay.
