Vol. 215 No. 2

Written Answer. - Mayo Housing Grants.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the names and addresses of and the amounts paid to each applicant for housing or reconstruction grants in County Mayo during the years 1951, 1952 and 1953.

The information sought by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department. The labour and time involved in compiling it would not be justified.

I gave notice of a question for today's Order Paper in connection with the closing of Foxford railway station and I received a communication from you, Sir, in regard to it. Do I understand that we dare not raise any question dealing with the Minister for Transport and Power——

I gave no such direction.

Do I understand the position to be that a line——

The Deputy may not discuss my ruling here. I have given the Deputy the ruling of the Chair and I have given no instruction that the Deputy may not raise a matter with the Minister for Transport and Power. The matter the Deputy wishes to raise with the Minister for Transport and Power is not the responsibility of the Minister.

Is the position, therefore, that we as taxpayers, subsidising——

The Deputy must take some other opportunity of discussing that matter. I cannot allow him to discuss the decision here.

I must discuss it myself with him. I thought the Minister would turn over a new leaf, starting a new session.

Would the Chair give me any indication as to when I shall be at liberty to discuss it?

The Deputy may discuss it with me or my staff.

It is a fantastic situation.
