Vol. 215 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Participation in World Fair.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount expended on Ireland's participation at the New York World Fair, including the expenses and remuneration of all officials and other persons involved.

The estimated cost, to date, of Ireland's participation in the New York World Fair amounts to £313,000. This figure includes all expenditure, with the exception of the salaries of the civil servants who staff the pavilion and who are on loan to the pavilion without replacement in their parent Departments.

46.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of reports in this country and abroad indicating disappointment with the attendances at the New York World Fair and suggesting that Ireland proposes to withdraw from the Fair; and if this is so.

I am aware of reports indicating disappointment with the attendances at the New York World Fair. While Ireland has joined with other international exhibitors in proposing a reduction in admission charges to encourage increased attendance, there is no basis for the report that Ireland proposes to withdraw from the Fair.

Has any action being taken on the proposal to reduce the admission charges?

No action has yet been taken that I know of.

Has the expenditure been worth while up to date?

It is within the limit of the Dáil vote.

Yes, but I merely asked the question: in the Minister's opinion has it been worth while?

(Cavan): Is the Minister in a position to say whether or not the National Flag is flying on the Irish stand at the pavilion?

That is a separate question. It does not arise out of the original question.
